Regional Sales Manager

The ideal candidate for the position of Regional Sales Manager will be an experienced sales person with managerial talents who is creative, competitive a and can further develop and grow our regional sales revenue by overseeing our growing network of alternative satire and entertainment newspapers. The Regional Sales Manager will be based out of San Francisco, but will be directing approximately five city locations through City Managers in both new and established markets. The major tasks of this position include: Driving local print advertising sales to meet and exceed targets through general management of sales region and building sales, people, and business management capabilities within the sales teams.

The right candidate must have a proven personal track record in sales management (media sales preferred), 5+ years of selling experience, combined with leadership skills to recruit, train and motivate other members of the sales team. Candidates must display a strong understanding of The Onion’s unique brand and readership.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive local print advertising sales goals to meet and exceed targets through general management of sales region.

  • Partner with Vice President / Print on print management parameters and issues including use of promotions, utilization of newsletter, sales contests, sales strategies, placement issues, vertical category marketing etc.

  • Oversight of sales reports including weekly sales, rate card integrity, competition tracker analysis, account retention, and new account generation.

  • Participation in setting of city and individual sales goals and participation in preparation of city budgets and goal-setting.

  • Monitor general status of accounts receivable in each market and assist in collection decisions for long past due or large past due accounts.

  • Build sales, people, and business management capabilities within sales teams, specifically the City Managers ensuring a strong bench of people talent is created, nurtured and retained for the business.

  • Monitor sales force performance including new account prospecting, contact with current accounts, achievement of sales goals, rate-card integrity, and collections

The Regional Sales Manager will need to possess, develop, and demonstrate effective leadership skills in order to recruit, train and motivate members of the sales team. This position requires the ability to exemplify leadership behaviors that support employee and organizational development, performance accountability, as well as foster team behaviors that create a selling culture in line with the values and the brand of The Onion.

The Regional Sales Manager will have extremely strong interpersonal as well as oral and written communication skills in order to convey pertinent information to sales team providing clear direction around goals and expectations. The ability to communicate effectively one-on-one and in a group setting to staff and clients is required.
