The watchdog group Fairness in Media 00:00:13.810,00:00:16.310 release a report this week, accusing the weather channel 00:00:16.620,00:00:19.790 of having a "clear and pronounced pro-weather bias." 00:00:20.390,00:00:23.890 Joining us now live is the director of the Study, Debra Henley. 00:00:24.290,00:00:25.760 Hello Michael. -Debra, good to have you with us. 00:00:25.960,00:00:27.460 Your report condemns the weather channel 00:00:27.930,00:00:30.290 For what you call, "One sided reporting." 00:00:30.860,00:00:33.600 How do you back up that claim? -After watching hundreds of hours 00:00:34.030,00:00:36.130 of programming, we concluded the weather channel 00:00:36.570,00:00:39.440 clearly and consistently over-reports weather related events 00:00:39.640,00:00:44.210 at the expense of other topics. There are on average four thousand mentions 00:00:44.710,00:00:48.350 of weather in a single news day. -Four thousand, it's an amazing statistic. 00:00:48.550,00:00:50.450 Are other view points represented at all? 00:00:51.120,00:00:55.060 -Barely. I mean, you'd think that absolutely nothing was going on the I-20 corridor, 00:00:55.460,00:00:57.400 other than light showers and isolated T-storms. 00:00:58.070,00:01:00.930 and even more insidious - they try to make programming look varied 00:01:01.130,00:01:04.270 by covering things like flight delays and vacation destinations, 00:01:04.670,00:01:07.200 but they always manage to bring it back to weather. 00:01:07.600,00:01:08.670 Well let's see what you're talking about, 00:01:08.870,00:01:11.410 here is the clip from the Weather Channel. -Great, ok. Look at this clip. 00:01:12.410,00:01:14.980 We are going to dazzle everybody, it's Holidazzle Parade going on 00:01:15.380,00:01:19.720 in Minneapolis, this is at Nicollet mall, and of course this location typically quite cold.. 00:01:20.110,00:01:22.280 -Do you see this? -It does seem fairly blatant. 00:01:22.480,00:01:25.420 Yes. I mean, if you look closely you'll see their news ticker 00:01:25.620,00:01:28.320 is little more than the temperatures of various cities 00:01:28.520,00:01:30.390 running 24 hours a day. -I have noticed that. 00:01:30.790,00:01:33.690 They even use, do you see this, background images 00:01:33.890,00:01:35.420 to subtly influence your beliefs about weather. 00:01:35.830,00:01:37.930 So it's a problems not only with the stories themselves. 00:01:38.130,00:01:41.100 Exactly Michael. And they use flashy graphics and smooth jazz 00:01:41.500,00:01:44.140 to distract viewers from the unrelenting pro-weather agenda 00:01:44.570,00:01:45.810 that they're constantly pushing. 00:01:46.010,00:01:47.910 That's unbelievable. What's behind it all, though? 00:01:48.340,00:01:51.500 Well what we discovered in our research is that there's an ancient cabal 00:01:51.990,00:01:54.350 of powerful weather fanatics operating outside any government. 00:01:54.780,00:01:57.550 Sometimes called "The Cloud Elders", sometimes called "The Night's Doppler". 00:01:58.190,00:02:00.490 Pulling the strings, not just of the weather channel, 00:02:00.690,00:02:02.790 but of the umbrella industry, the sunscreen industry, 00:02:02.990,00:02:04.060 we have to fight back. 00:02:04.260,00:02:07.100 Debra Henely of "Fairness in Media", thank you and good luck 00:02:07.460,00:02:09.090 with getting your message heard. -Thanks, Michael.
