With the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team just four games away from completing a perfect 40-0 season, Onion Sports takes a look back at the greatest undefeated runs in sports history.

  • 1971 Nebraska Cornhuskers: The University of Nebraska football team achieved a 13-0 season, winning all but one of their games by at least 24 points, a fact that the team’s players have mentioned at a variety of Lincoln-area bars numerous times over the last 44 years
  • 1976 Indiana Hoosiers: Their undefeated season brought Bobby Knight the level of goodwill that could only have been squandered by choking a player and assaulting a police officer
  • 1945 Army Football: Army’s football team completed consecutive undefeated seasons after dropping a second nuclear bomb on the University of Notre Dame
  • 2003-04 Arsenal: After the Gunners became the first Premier League team to go an entire season without losing a single match, manager Arsène Wenger joyously proclaimed that he would just coast on the accomplishment for the subsequent 15 years
  • 1954-56 Oklahoma Sooners: An outstanding team that was unfortunately too early to have earned a spot in the VIZIO Fiesta Bowl
  • 2002-2009 Washington Mystics: The WNBA team was the subject of a 300-word Sports Illustrated write-up after winning 270 games in a row over eight undefeated seasons
  • 2000-01 Tiger Woods: Winning all four majors consecutively over two years is a feat so incredible that it might eventually, perhaps several decades from now, be the first thing people think about when they hear the name Tiger Woods
  • 2011 Cottsville High School Football: Despite their three losses, the team remained perfect throughout the season by being upstanding Cougars on the field and in the community
  • 1972 UCLA Bruins: The Bruins went 30-0 in the regular season en route to the NCAA championship, with players motivated by legendary coach John Wooden’s famous quote, “You better crush every single one of those goddamn worthless gutter teams, because if you don’t, I’ll fucking kill you”
  • 1972 Miami Dolphins: Their remarkable achievement has largely gone unrecognized given the team’s decades-long vow of silence
  • 1994 Penn State Nittany Lions: Joe Paterno’s last undefeated season, which was stripped away after the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal erupted in 2012 and promptly put back into the record books once the public had enough time to finally forget about the whole thing
